For nearly a decade the Canon XL1 and XL1s have been workhorses within the industry. When they were brought to market they revolutionized digital recording with their modular design and affordable price point. However, in recent years the aging Canon XL1 has been begrudgingly pushed aside for models that offer better low light recording and high definition. Even so, the big brother Canon XL1s is still a staple among videographers, serving its time recording secondary angles or as a backup camcorder.

As time ticks by, it is always important to periodically reevaluate your investment to be sure that your dollars couldn't be better spent elsewhere. For any serious film-maker it is prime time to consider new technology developments, such as capturing video in high definition or the move from MiniDV to hard drive based recording. The move to high def may or may not make sense depending on your purposes; but newer camcorder models are increasingly becoming less expensive, yet the trade-in value on a used Canon XL1s remains fairly high.

Within the realm of cameras and camcorders, laymen's often judge the sophistication of a particular model by the price tag. The truth is that while a used Canon XL1s can still fetch a fair amount of money it may not be the best bang for your buck. For example, many film students are prompted to buy the XL1s, as its design is relative to many of the professional 16mm film cameras used in studios today; studying with the XL1s helps students gain a familiarity with the equipment they might use later in their careers.

If you do not require the broadcast style settings of the Canon XL1 then this is an avenue that should be considered.
